We update our wardrobe, get our bodies beach ready, and slather on the sunscreen when summer rolls around to stay as comfortable as possible when those temperatures start to climb. However, what we may forget to do during those dog days is give our houses some home design lovin’ to increase our comfort level and experience the season in style. For our part-time residents, there are even some summer design trends that will work all year round to ensure that every day you spend in our Sunshine State reminds you of why you skipped the winter up north in the first place. Get in the spirit of the hot season with these top design trends for summer (and possibly Florida in general) and you can be sure you will be ready to tackle everything summer has to offer.
Refined Outdoor Living
The summer was made for barbecues and days spent by the water, so the easiest way to alter your design for summer is to focus on updating your outdoor living space. Zillow Digs recently announced their top outdoor patio trends for summer 2015 and lime green, vertical gardens, and hurricane candles were the most popular patio trends discovered. We love the idea of lime green accents and the Emilia at Matera in The Lake Club in Lakewood Ranch shows how this citrus color can make your outdoor living or dining area pop. Add that to a summer kitchen equipped with a grill, refrigerator, and sink and you are in for glorious days filled with family, friends, and fun.
Bright Colors
Don’t just keep those bright colors outside; pops of colors inside your home can brighten your space and your mood this summer. Switch out the warmer tones of the fall and winter and opt for some fresh and fun colors like tangerine or turquoise for your vases, throw pillows, or curtains. The Clara at The Founders Club in Sarasota, FL is a great example of the bright color trend with a vivid palette of green and turquoise found in the villa home’s living room. Want to make sure you can bring back those warm tones once the fall arrives? The home’s neutral background is the perfect base for quick seasonal design changes.
And since every room in your home needs a refresher now and again, your bedroom is also a great place to take advantage of design trends. We follow the same guidelines for the bedroom as we do the living room: Maintain a neutral palette and change up the accent colors according to season. The summer is not a stranger to bright colors, but another good color trend for the summer is pastels. The Master Suite of the Brighton in Quail West in Naples has pale lavender walls to bring color into a space filled with pure and crisp white tones. The Master Suite also features thin materials and light fabric to counteract the intense heat outside.
Wood
Speaking of neutral backgrounds, your furniture may not be the easiest thing to swap out for the season, but a great piece of furniture can transcend any season. We love the use of wood throughout a home and its neutral and natural tones make a great addition to any accent color. Have fun with an accent wall of wood planks, a wood-topped kitchen island, wood beams on your ceiling, or a beautiful wood coffee table, like the one found in our Southampton model home located in Old Naples.
Beach and Nature Inspired Designs
The waves, the shells, the sand; every aspect of the beach is a great reminder of the wonderment Florida’s coast has to offer and your home can represent an extension of your very best day by the water with a beach or nature inspired design. The living room in the Bettina at Mediterra serves as a great specimen of this design trend with soft tan tones in the paint, furniture, and textured accent wall mixed with pops of blues and greens in the fabrics and accessories. Indoor water features are also a great way to take your beachy design to the next level, but we prefer the beautiful fountains and waterfalls found in the courtyards of the Bardolino at Portofino in the Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club and the Chianti III in Grey Oaks.
